Computer Geek WannaBEI was a lonely soul. I was living in the projects after enjoying my new sobriety after years of being tortured by the awesome power of Sauce. (Alcohol) I don't regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it. I was happy living in that small apartment watching my car get broken into several times but life was good. Then I found the love of my life... She encouraged me to go ahead and do something and taught me that I can still do more. And she had a computer too! (Oh yes, she won my heart and I didn't even know ANYTHING about computers) That computer was old (dinosaur) so we decided to buy a new one... It was a lemon (compaq) but it was an excellent learning tool to just keep the silly thing running. Me and that Compaq have an awesome history together where it taught me how to format hardrives and upgrade hardware/software to try and get it into a more stable lifestyle. After I got that machine stable all I used it for was to get on the internet occasionally to find cheats for the Legend of Zelda that I was so fond of playing... I wasn't doing the music stuff much anymore except for a few Acid projects that were so easy to put together but often sound canned because of the loop libraries that everybody uses...over and over and over.. Then at our crummy ISP's website we were using (Compuserve) I noticed a "create your own website" section. I was intrigued and decided I'd see how it was to have a personal page up telling all about my successes and failures and newfound sobriety and grace through our Lord and Savior... You know, THAT guy's name...JJ JESUS... Go ahead and say the word it won't hurt ya.. That's when website building became an obsession for me. I started learning HTML and then more about hosting and servers and stuff.. I sold a drum set in order to get some money to buy some software to help me with pages and graphics. I went to the library and started reading books about it. I started lurking in forums to get a better understanding about certain scripts and stuff. Some friends of ours saw some of my work and asked me to put together a site for their court reporting business. I didn't really think I had lots of abilities or anything but they insisted so I put together a site for them. - And they liked it! Wow! Then I started getting those crazy dreams that so many new (and old) web designers get. Those delusions of grandeur. We start seeing very big $$$ signs in front of our eyes and start thinking we can just sit here at the house and do work we love and make a cushy living at it and not have to work for the MAN anymore. Not So, I'm afraid.. There are thousands upon thousands of independent freelance designers out there not to mention the tons of complete web development firms all wanting to get you on the internet. There are also tons of hosts wanting to host your site and/or help you "build your own" with no experience whatsoever. Or those wanting to help you "become the No. 1 position in the search engines" Or submit your site into "thousands of directories" the list goes on infinitum. I was finding out there was tons of "stuff" to sift through in order to get a good deal for hosting and other aspects. I had a goal to find out the absolute cheapest way to get a website up on the internet and then offer that to folks as a ministry and to feed my intense appetite for web design and creativity. In this process I have been privileged to be able to have some projects and increase my online portfolio. I have lost some projects and failed some people too but have also gained valuable experience through all of this. I am proud of my internet presence I have created here at DaveStuff and want to continue building my skills and offering a place for people like me to have a website without paying a fortune because it's not really necessary.. And, I want it to be a God thing. I always like to remember Him in everything I do because it is only because of His grace that I am still walking around here on planet earth anyway. So do you or somebody you know wanna website? Peace and Grace to you! |
